Taking Care of Your Pet from Beyond the Grave

They may say a dog is a man's best friend, but some pet owners have taken this phrase to new levels.

A number of wealthy pet owners are choosing to leave their multi-million dollar fortunes not to friends or family, but to their furry friends.

Yes, that's right, some of the world's rich and famous have given a portion of their fortune to their pets in their wills.

For example, Gunther VI, the German shepherd is believed to be the richest dog in the world.

According to Born Rich, German countess Karlotta Liebenstein left her considerable wealth to Gunther III which was then transferred to Gunther VI on his father's death.

It's thought that the multi-millionaire left a sum of $372 million to her pet pooch in her will.

The German countess isn't the only one to have lavished affection (and cash) on her pets. It's been reported that each of Oprah's dogs are looking at a windfall of $30 million when the TV personality dies.

But, it's not quite a simple as it all sounds. There are a series of steps required before you can hand over your cash to your prized pet.

You need to ensure the animal has a caregiver and some to look after the money on the animal's behalf.

That all depends on whether the pooch gets the money in the first place. In some cases the family can dispute the decision and a judge has the power the drastically reduce the amount of money given the the animal.
