Police in Thailand recovered a six-carat diamond from a Chinese tourist's intestines by pulling it out of her anus.

The woman was arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport on Thursday after she was accused of stealing the diamond from a jewellery fair outside the city.

According to the Herald Sun, the woman and her partner were arrested after they allegedly switched a fake stone for a real one.

They denied stealing the jewel but X-rays showed the object in the woman's intestine.

When she was told the diamond could injure her, the woman agreed to have it removed.

The BBC reports that she was given laxatives but when this failed, a colonoscope was used to extract the gem.

Police said the procedure took around 12 minutes.

In 2012, a man was arrested at an airport in South Africa after swallowing 220 diamonds in an attempt to smuggle them out of the country.

The 25-year-old man was arrested at O.R. Tambo International Ariport just outside Johannesburg after the diamonds showed up on a body scan at security.

Capt. Paul Ramaloko of the South African Police Service said the diamonds were later recovered from the man, and were worth around £1.5 million.
