Mo Farah makes it two in a row at Great North Run

Mo Farah has won the Great North Run for a second year in a row as he was joined by thousands of runners in the famous half marathon.

The reigning Olympic champion successfully defended his title in Britain's biggest race, finishing it in just under an hour.

Britain enjoyed further success with David Weir winning the men's wheelchair race and Shelly Woods taking the women's wheelchair crown.

Kenya's Mary Keitany won the women's elite race in a time of 1hr 7min and 32 seconds.

Starting in Newcastle and going over the Tyne Bridge, an estimated 57,000 people made their way through Gateshead and onto the coast at South Shields.

Some of the celebrity names who took part included Professor Brian Cox, Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell, TV presenter Steph McGovern and former footballer Kevin Kilbane.

Last year it became the first mass participation run in the world to have its one millionth competitor cross the line.

Many competitors donned fancy dress costumes and a brass band was seen bringing up the rear.

It is expected around £25m will be raised by those taking part for charity.
