A machine malfunction at an Air Transat hangar at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Saturday morning saw a huge quantity of foam released into a road.

The foam, which is 98 per cent water and harmless, should dissipate on its own but police were pictured monitoring the scene.

CTV News reports that fire crews were sent after the fire suppression system malfunctioned and sent foam streaming into the air.

Peel Regional Police said the foam was enough to fill "two football fields" and was up to nine metres high in some areas.

Cost. Rachel Gibbs of Peel Regional Police told CBC: "It's quite a scene when it starts blowing around."

She added: "They're going to be trying to vacuum some of the foam. And apparently water will also suppress the foam, so if it rains that will be beneficial."

Earlier this year, the inaugural Virgin Atlantic flight from Manchester to Atlanta was grounded after a water cannon salute accidentally used foam instead.

The salute is often carried out by airport fire engines to celebrate a new flight, but it went wrong when foam instead of water shot out of one of the cannons.

Foam reportedly clogged up the jet engines and turbine blades, and the aircraft had to undergo a safety check.

The incident led to an overnight delay, with holidaymakers being told they would have to wait until the next day to fly.
