A cyber security expert has revealed how thieves can easily break into your hotel room safe using simple tools.

The YouTube demonstration was created by Jim Stickley who says it "is important for people to understand the risks of the world".

In the video, Jim shows how easy it is to open a locked hotel safe using simple tools and a paper clip-like object without known the security code.

Speaking to The Huffington Post, he said: "People often think the room itself is secure. They know that the cleaning crew may have access, but think that is a low risk especially if they use the hotel room safe. The reality is that gaining access to a person's hotel room is not difficult."

Chris McGoey, a security expert who runs Los Angeles-based McGoey Security Consulting, told the website: "Most hotel employees, other than maintenance or security staff, do not possess such skill or the desire to break into safes for a living."

He added that Stickley's video did not address how non-hotel employees would get inside a room if they wanted to break into a safe.
