If the Queen paid rent the bill from her reign would top £1bn

Ever wondered what it would cost to rent Buckingham Palace? We can't say we had either but someone has calculated just what the Queen would have paid in rent for her London pad if she'd been forking out throughout her reign.

The figure? A whopping £303,340 a month.

If that's a little hard to take, then prepare yourself. The team at lettings agency Rentify, which did the sums, then worked out the various rental costs for six more royal palaces over the Queen's entire reign with the grand total topping £1 billion.

It comes as the Queen becomes the longest-reigning British monarch, surpassing Queen Victoria.

We never thought that Palace life came in cheaply but even we're a bit shocked.

The figures are based on rental over 63 years and seven months, with the rent on Buckingham Palace alone costing £231,448,420.

But that's before the premium property charge kicks in. Basically because the property has extra facilities, like 24/7 security and large gardens, Rentify says the final cost over the full reign would be £462,896,840.

"Royal properties will always command a royal price tag, and these estimates show that even royalty would not be exempt from the effect of astronomic London rents," said George Spencer, chief executive officer of Rentify.

Quite.
