And you don't even need to go very far to stay in the cream of the crop - because the best castle-hotel is right here in the UK, according to TripAdvisor.

The beautiful Fonab Castle Hotel in Scotland can be found on the banks of Loch Faskally and the castle retains many of its original features. It boasts 26 guestrooms and is on the doorstep of the extraordinarily beautiful Perthshire countryside.

Three of this year's top ten come from the UK, with Rowton Castle in Shropshire and Glenapp Castle in Scotland also making an appearance.

Italian castles are also highly ranked with Hotel Castello di Sinio in Piedmont featuring as well as Castello di Petroia and Castello di Monterone in Umbria which both made the top ten.

TripAdvisor spokesperson James Kay says: "These castle hotels should act as great inspiration for those travellers looking to experience a truly unique and out-of-the-ordinary-type of accommodation."

Top ten castles you can sleep in
Fonab Castle Hotel can be found on the banks of Loch Faskally in the heart of Perthshire. The castle, which still retains many of its original features, is now a 26 bedroom hotel and has been voted the best castle-hotel in Europe by Tripadvisor reviewers.
Castle Hotel Auf Schoenburg in Germany dates back as far as 911 and is situated in the Rhine valley town of Oberwesel. The castle was burned down by French soldiers and left in ruins until 1914 but the eye-catching castle is now home to a 22 guestroom hotel.
This medieval castle is perfect for wine lovers as it's set right in the hear of the Barolo and Barbaresco wine zones. The castle only opened as a hotel in 2005 but the nine suites and five guest rooms are the perfect place to enjoy a wine tasting trip. 
This ninth century castle consists of a umber of medieval buildings, all of which can be found within the castle walls. Each of the 13 rooms have been individually designed using antique furniture and original features. 
Originally a military headquarters, Castello di Monterone is now home to 18 guestrooms. The impressive accommodation can be found on the road which connects Perugia to Rome. 
This historic 17th century castle has a number of beautifully designed rooms, all of which are home to the traditional four-poster beds that English castles are known for. 
Found in the midst of a number of UNESCO World Heritage sites, Chateau Heralec is found in the Czech Republic's Vysocina region. This romantic castle also boasts a L'Occitane spa for those looking to indulge themselves during their stay.
Ashford Castle dates back to 1228 and the expansive building is set in 350 acres of land in County Mayo. The castle boasts 82 rooms for guests to choose from all of which combine modern luxuries with antique features. 
Castle Durrow was built in 1716 but only became a hotel in 1998 when the Stokes family bought and converted it and the hotel is now home to 46 luxurious guestrooms.
Glenapp Castle was built for the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire in 1870. This beautiful Scottish building offers 17 traditionally designed hotel rooms.
