Ana Cayazzo and her partner Miguel Caridad died instantly when they were struck by the car as it came off the road near La Coruña in Galicia, north-west Spain.

According to the Mirror, Miguel was a keen racing fan, and the couple had driven a short way from their home to watch the race, which included more than 130 cars.

Ana was due to give birth this week, locals said.

ITV News reports that a Civil Guard spokesman said: "One of the drivers took the track at a higher speed than he should have and he veered off a curve, slamming into around 20 people."

The site adds that local media have reported the driver and co-driver were unharmed.

A number of people posted pictures of the scene on Twitter.

The Standard reports that even the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, took to Twitter, writing: "The Coruna Rally is in mourning. My deepest condolences to the bereaved and wishes for a complete recovery of those injured."
