A kayaker has received a "deep wound" after being attacked by a hammerhead shark in California this weekend.

The man was 1.5 miles off Deer Creek beach in Malibu on Saturday afternoon when a 10ft hammerhead shark bit his lower leg.

Lidia Barillas, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Lifeguards Division, told the LA Times: "It was a bite and release. Nothing severe but a very deep wound."

The Daily Mail reports that he was able to paddle back to share before being airlifted to Los Robles Medical Centre in Thousand Oaks, reports CBS Local.

A friend who was with the victim at the time told the channel: "We saw this fin and then it dove and then all of a sudden he got bit and he put his foot up on the kayak and was like 'Dude, I just got bit.'"

The news comes just days after a surfer in California miraculously escaped unharmed after a shark attack at Morro Strand State Beach left a 14-inch-wide bite out of her board.

Elinor Dempsey, 54, said she initially thought the animal was a dolphin but "went into shock the moment it bit the board". She managed to swim back to shore unharmed.
