The UK is set to endure a wintry feel this week as a 'polar plume' pushes temperatures down.

Forecasters suggest a 'polar plume' could see temperatures dip to 0C in Scotland and northern England.

Speaking to the Evening Standardand theMirror, Brian Gaze at The Weather Outlook said: "A 'polar plume' means very chilly nights and ground frosts are possible, with a chance of 0C in sheltered parts of northern England and Scotland by the weekend."

And Leon Brown at The Weather Channel told Aol Travel: "There's a cool period for the UK ahead in winds from the north. Temperatures this week and coming weekend will be 2C to 4C below normal. Feeling autumnal.

Some heavy showers will occur on Wednesday. The showers will be mainly near coasts from Thursday with drier weather inland in central and southern areas.

"There will still be some heavier showers along the east coast Thursday and Friday with strong north west winds making it feel rather cool.

"A cold front will move south on Saturday with clearer weather following, but may bring a very chilly start to Sunday with ground frosts and possibly temperatures down to 0C in sheltered parts of Scotland and northern England.

"High pressure looks set to build across the UK next week so we can expect mainly dry weather and temperatures to pick up a bit to nearer normal, but still cool at night with mist and fog."

Chris Burton at The Weather Network agreed, telling Aol Travel: "Low pressure will be a slow moving feature positioned over the North Sea during the next few days. This system brought the wet and unpleasant Bank Holiday to much of England, and will now usher in a cool northerly pattern for the rest of the week.

"Temperatures will struggle to do better than 13 to 15C in northern areas for several days ahead, and only climbing to highs of 17 to 19C in the south.

"Where exposed to a strong northerly wind on the east coast, it will feel distinctly chilly for the first week of September. There will be some sunshine, but often a lot of cloud cover.

"Where the wind drops overnight, temperatures will become increasing chilly, locally dipping below 5C in the north and west, particularly later this week."

His outlook for the week after, however, was also more positive, adding: "Looking further ahead, high pressure is expected to influence our weather into next week, bringing a good deal of dry weather, and a slow improvement in temperatures."
