At least 20 people have died and 31 are missing in Dominica after tropical storm Erika hit the Caribbean island on Friday.

The prime minister said the floods and mudslides caused by the storm have set the country back 20 years.

"The extent of the devastation is monumental," Dominca's Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said. "It is far worse than expected. We have, in essence, to rebuild Dominica."

Erika brought 15 inches of rain to the island before toppling trees and power lines in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Security guard Peter Julian, 46, told the Associated Press: "When I returned, I saw that my house that I have lived in for over 20 years was gone.

"I have lost everything and now have to start all over again."

According to the Guardian, the tropical storm could gain strength over northern Cuba and Florida.

Dominica's airports remain closed and some communities have been cut off by flooding and landslides on the mountainous island.

In Puerto Rico, more than $16 million in damage was caused to crops.
