Lazing around in the savannah sun, it's the last thing a hippo needs: a pack of lions who are feeling peckish.

Getting up off its haunches, the hippopotamus saunters off towards the river in the hopes of giving the big cats the slip.

But once the hippo realised it was cornered, with a sheer drop towards the river below, it had only one option.

With the lions ready to pounce, the hippo takes the plunge and dives into the river.

Fortunately diving is not a career it has in mind as a remarkable amount of splash was caused.

Living to fight another day, the hippo paddled downstream in front of the dejected lions, pausing only to turn around and give them a display off her large mouth and teeth.

The chase happened in South Africa's Karongwe Private Game Reserve and was captured by Morné Hamlyn.
