Four people have died after a shooting at a travellers' camp in Roye, Northern France.

Three other people, including another child, a policeman and the gunman himself, were also seriously injured in the shooting.

According to the Mirror, a military helicopter, members of the military and police officers were at the scene.

Bernard Cazeneuve, France's Interior Minister, has flown to Roye, reports RT.com.

Mr Cazeneuve told Europe 1: "A man has killed a 6-month-baby in cold blood."

The man, woman and child were reportedly killed on the spot, and the 44-year-old policeman died of his injuries later on.

It is not clear what triggered the outbreak of violence, but sources told the Daily Telegraph that it was a criminal matter not linked to terrorism.

The news comes just days after a man opened fire on a train travelling from Amsterdam to Paris, but was beaten into submission by three Americans and a Briton.

The four men received the Legion d'Honneur from French President Francois Hollande for their efforts in preventing a potentially devastating attack.
