The dirtiest, most germ-ridden place on a plane has been revealed, and it's probably not where you think it is.

It's often the most unexpected areas that carry the most germs, so after watching this video you might want to start thinking about carrying some anti-bacterial gel whenever you travel.

"Stow away your tables for take-off" is a familiar phrase for seasoned travellers, but it's also time to take a closer look at these handy fold-away trays.

Air stewards and stewardesses have exposed the horrifying ways they've seen passengers using tray tables in the past with one crew member exposing a family who used the table as a space to change their baby's nappy.

A recent study also revealed that tray tables are the place where e. coli survives the second longest on a plane - 72 hours.

But that's still not the filthiest spot on a plane. Amazingly, the dirtiest place on a plane is often the most hotly contested between passengers... the armrest!

The study says that it's non-porous surface makes it the perfect breeding ground for e. coli to live on for up to 96 hours.

Unsurprisingly, the toilet handle ranks highly as well, coming in at third place.

Oh, and watch the soft furnishings too. According to the Wall Street Journal airlines only tend to wash their pillows and blankets around once a month. So maybe pack an extra scarf and jumper and forgo the comfy head rest next time you fly...
