Several people are feared dead after a plane crashed into cars on a major road during an aerial display at the Shoreham Airshow in West Sussex.

The aircraft, believed to be a Hawker Hunter jet, plummeted to the ground when it failed to pull out of a loop manoeuvre, smashing into the A27 in a huge fireball.

Police said there were "several casualties" after the plane hit a number of cars. The Royal Sussex County Hospital was put on major alert at 2pm and told to expect casualties.

One person was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition and another with minor injuries. It is feared others died at the scene.

Horrified onlookers described seeing the plane flying low to the ground followed by a "huge ball of fire and black smoke".
