Boxer Anthony Ogogo set to slug it out on Strictly Come Dancing

Updated

The newest Strictly Come Dancing contestant is set to pack a real punch in the form of professional boxer Anthony Ogogo.

He's the ninth celebrity hoping for dancing success on the BBC1 show.

"I've faced a lot of tough opposition in the past, but I've never faced anyone as tough as the Strictly judges before!" he said.

"My mum is a massive fan of the show so I will be trying my hardest to make her proud."

An Olympic bronze medal winner who has been boxing since the age of 12, Ogogo is hoping he will not be throwing in the towel early in the show.

He joins an impressive line-up that includes singer and TV star Peter Andre, Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell, BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott, broadcaster Jeremy Vine, former Coronation Street star Georgia May Foote, EastEnders actress Kellie Bright and newsreader Katie Derham.

Andre said he would like to be paired with Ola Jordan, adding that the pair have had a "long-standing" joke about him doing the show.

"I've met her many times in the past and we always joked for years, it's been going on for years, where I said, 'I'll only ever do Strictly if you're my partner'," he told Free Radio. "Because she kept saying, 'When are you going to come on the show, when are you going to do it?'"

Due to other commitments, he has had to turn the show down for the last three years.

Hold My Hand singer Jess Glynne recently announced on Twitter she will be performing on the launch show.

The 13th series of Strictly Come Dancing begins on BBC1 in September.
