With world's tallest building, a manmade island shaped like a palm tree, the world's fastest roller caster and one of the biggest indoor ski areas on the planet, Dubai doesn't do things by halves.

This emirate city has become a symbol of ultra-modernity, with its daredevil architecture, soaring skylines, obsession with fashion and style and flourishing contemporary art scene.

There's no doubt Dubai is an eye-opener - and a treat for all the senses - but for all its futuristic appeal there is much fun to be beyond all this jaw-dropping superficiality. While shopaholics will be drawn to the enormous shopping malls, many don't realise, for example, that there's plenty of retail therapy to be had by strolling around the bustling traditional souqs haggling for gold and frankincense. And while it's great fun to sit in a rooftop bar and take in the sunset, you could also try enjoying the view from the back of a camel, for example.

Beyond the roller coasters and water parks, thrill-seekers will also find plenty to lure them. How about trying your skills at sandboarding in the dunes, for example, or to playing polo on a camel?

Take a look at our slideshow below for more interesting things to do and let us know in the comments section if you have any other suggestions.
