Uzbekistan Airways is to start weighing passengers and their hand luggage before allowing them to board their flights.

After checking in, passengers will be directed by airport staff to weigh in at machines at departure gates.

The numbers they reveal will remain confidential and passengers will only be documented as male, female or child, says the airline.

In a press release, the airline stated: "According to the laws of the International Air Transport Association, airlines are obliged to carry out regular procedures of pre-flight control such as weighing passengers with hand luggage in order to observe the requirements for ensuring flight safety."

At the moment, no individual maximum has been declared, nor is it known whether one will be put in place.

It's also unclear what the action will be if the flight is declared over the alloted weight limit.

The airline is not the first to enforce weight limits. In 2013, Samoa Air instituted a pay-as-you-weigh policy, charging heavier passengers higher prices.

Uzbekistan Airways have offered assurances that the scale reading would not affect the airfare.
