Warning for British tourists as temperatures reach 38C in Europe

British tourists have been warned to stay safe on holiday as a dangerous heatwave hits popular summer destinations this weekend.

Cyprus, Italy, Spain and Turkey are expected to see temperatures of up to 38C on Saturday, while even Austria and Germany will see extremely hot weather.

Forecasters have predicted highs of 38C in Berlin, 37C in Austria and 36C in Warsaw.

The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has warned British travellers to keep hydrated and stay protected in the sun.

A spokeswoman told the Independent: "Holidaymakers should avoid the beaches at midday when the sun is at its hottest. People should also make sure they drink lots of water and use a high factor suntan lotion when they are outside.

"Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable and parents are advised to take extra care in the sun."

Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror reports that public health experts have warned that Brits with heart and respiratory problems are at higher risk and should "take extra care to keep cool".

In the UK, temperatures are set to reach 27C on Sunday.
