When you think about saving money in the kitchen, you probably think about food hacks like using stale bread as croutons or making a little extra dinner to take to work for lunch the next day.

But, there are so many other ways you can avoid splashing so much cash in the kitchen.

Here we've listed three other areas where you can slimline your spending and pinch pennies.

1. Appliances
Your fridge is one of your most important appliances, so you need to make sure you're using it correctly. Don't put hot food straight into the fridge because the cooling system will be forced to spend all its energy cooling that one dish. Instead, leave it to cool outside of the fridge first. Another tip is to make sure that your fridge's door seal is still working properly. If you can pull a five pound note straight through then you need to replace the seal.

2. Food
It's been reported that each consumer wastes 210 - 250 lbs a year in food - which means we're throwing away around 25% of the food in our home. One tip is to keep your food storage spaces wide and shallow so you don't forget about pots and tins of food that are lurking at the back. 'First in, first out' is a good policy to keep in mind when you're using up the contents of your fridge. Move new groceries to the back to make sure you're finishing older products before they go out of date.

3. Cleaning
No one enjoys cleaning, so why not make it easier on yourself and your wallet by following these helpful rules. Instead of putting food in ziplock bags, use reusable tupperware boxes. Ditch kitchen roll in favour of dish clothes, not only are they cheap but you can chuck them in the washing machine when they get too dirty.
