Father dies rescuing son off Dorset beach
A man died in Dorset while rescuing his son from the English Channel.
The boy's father, in his 40s, went into the sea, near Chesil Beach, to rescue him but got into difficulty himself.
According to ITV News, the man was pulled out of the water by a lifeboat crew and was taken to hospital but died on arrival.
The child was uninjured in the incident.
A Dorset Police spokeswoman told Western Morning News: "Police, Her Majesty's Coastguard and paramedics attended. A man aged in his 40s and from Enfield was recovered from the water.
"He was airlifted to Dorset County Hospital but has sadly died."
Linda Cooper, who runs the Blue Anchor cafe, told the newspaper: "The poor little boy was OK but was very shaken. He was with his mum and his sisters and they were devastated."
The incident comes after ABTA and the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK) urged Britons to swim safe, revealing that over 115 people have drowned in France since the summer began.
RLSS UK Chief Executive Di Steer said: "We all know water is fun but it's truly tragic that people lose their lives to accidental drowning every year, and that near drowning incidents – many of which could have been avoided - are all too common."
