Royal Mint reissues £100 coins after first set sells out
The Royal Mint recently released a limited edition £100 coin featuring the image of Buckingham Palace.
The initial release of the commemorative coin, which is meant as a tribute to the palace, sold out in just 11 days.
As a result of the coin's popularity the Royal Mint has issued a second batch which are available at face value and can be ordered directly from the Royal Mint website.
According to the Royal Mint, the coin is 'struck in two full ounces of 999 fine silver'. The image that was chosen for the reverse of the coin was created by Glyn Davies and Laura Clancy while the obverse image was designed by Jody Clark.
One reviewer said: "This is what we have been waiting for, yet again another great looking coin, in the safe we go yet again for the 3 babies when they are old enough to to appreciate this wonderful object, once again ....... Well done Royal Mint."
The special edition coin is also significantly larger than a standard £1 coin, measuring 40mm across as opposed to the smaller coin which measures just 22.5mm.
The £100 coin is also the first face-value coin to have the new portrait of the Queen and it also comes with a booklet detailing the history of the country's most famous palace.
Originally bought in 1761 by George III, Buckingham House has been remodelled numerous times over the years and Queen Victoria was the first monarch to take up residence in the palace in 1837.
Director of commemorative coin and medals at the Mint, Shane Bissett, said: "Buckingham Palace is an instantly recognisable architectural icon for the millions of British citizens and tourists who have seen it in person or in pictures and on film", the Mirror reports.
