Wedding ends in mass brawl at historic country hotel

A wedding at a historic country hotel in Cheshire has been ruined after the reception ended in a mass brawl.

Police officers were even injured while trying to break up a fight between two men and two women at Holin Hall Country House Hotel in Bollington, Macclesfield.

Ten police cars and a riot van were sent to stop the fight that broke out on the hotel's driveway.

Four people were arrested at the scene, and the wedding was cancelled before the bride and groom even had the chance to enjoy their first dance.

Kris Clayton, owner of the hotel, told the Manchester Evening News: "There was an argument between family members and a fight on the drive way. We called the police. Fortunately there was no damage to the hotel and no staff were injured. In discussion with the bride and groom and police it was decided to cancel the remainder of the gathering.

"The couple had the ceremony and wedding breakfast but had not had their first dance or even got into the room for the evening do.

"In seven years as owners of the hotel we have never had to stop proceedings. It's very sad for the bride and groom."

Speaking to the Mirror, Inspector Catherine Mitchell, from Macclesfield Police, said: "We were called at 6pm on Sunday to reports of a fight at a wedding. It appears relatives of the bride and groom had drunk too much and something erupted, things got out of hand. While trying to break up the fight they turned on two male officers who suffered scratches and bruising injuries.

"Three people were arrested at the scene and a further person was arrested today (Monday). We are now trying to unpick what happened. Ultimately this is very sad for the bride and groom on their big day."
