A toaster or decanter might do for most of us - but for Cristiano Ronaldo, the only possible wedding present for his agent, Jorge Mendes, was a Greek island costing millions.

According to Spanish sports news site Mundo Deportivo, the Real Madrid star knows the Greek islands well from numerous holidays. And, as best man at Mendes' wedding to Sandra Barbosa in Porto, Portugal on Sunday, he wanted to give the happy couple something special.

Mendes, 49, has a business called Gestifute, and is one of the game's most successful agents. He's not short of a bob or two himself, with an estimated worth of €100 million, making him one of Portugal's richest men.

Along with Ronaldo, his client list includes James Rodriguez, Pepe and Fabio Coentrao from Real Madrid, along with Manchester United's Angel di Maria and David de Gea, and Monaco's Joao Moutinho. He's brokered more than £1 billion of transfer deals.

Amongst the 400-odd guests at the wedding were Real Madrid President Florentino Perez, Benfica President Luis Filipe Vieira, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

Mendes and Sandra Barbosa have been in a civil partnership since 2005, and have three children together.

The price of the island isn't known, but will almost certainly run into the millions. The hard-pressed Greek government has put more than a dozen islands up for sale, along with other public assets, in an effort to raise some cash. They're priced between €3 million and €50 million - although many have no buildings in which to stay.

But Ronaldo can afford it. Last year, according to Forbes, he made $80 million, making him the third-highest earning sports star after boxers Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

And he's by no means the first time that the footballer has made a generous gesture. Earlier this year, for example, he donated £5 million to Save The Children for earthquake relief in Nepal.

He's also worked with Unicef and World Vision, as well as charities helping children in Gaza. And, last year, he gave the family of a ten-month-old baby boy suffering with cortical dysplasia €60,000 to pay for an operation.
