Ryanair flight turns back to airport after taking off with wrong luggage

A Ryanair plane turned back to the City of Derry airport 20 minutes into a flight - because it emerged the aircraft was carrying some luggage from the previous flight.

The Monday evening flight was bound for Alicante, Spain, when the captain announced it was turning back to Derry.

The plane landed safely back in Northern Ireland and the pieces of luggage from the previous flight were identified and taken off.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, a Ryanair spokesman explained: "This flight from Derry to Alicante returned to Derry shortly after take-off to unload baggage from the previous flight, which the third party ground handling agent had failed to remove before take-off.

"The aircraft landed normally, the baggage was removed and the flight departed to Alicante. Ryanair apologised to customers affected by this short delay."

The flight originally took off at 5.55pm, and set off for a second time for Alicante at 7pm.

Management at Derry Airport told the MailOnline that they were "sorry for the inconvenience caused" and that they were "reviewing circumstances of the incident".
