A lightning strike has killed seven members of the same family in Mexico.

The incident happened in farming country near the towns of Mesa Cuata and El Terrero on Friday afternoon.

The group were struck while working in a field, a Guanajuato civil protection official told AFP.

According to the Daily Mail, the children who died were aged three, five, nine and 14.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the other victims were three women aged 19, 32, and 44.

Another child and a 26-year-od woman were also injured, although it is believed their injuries are not life-threatening.

The town where the fatalities occurred is in the mountainous Sierra Gorda region, reports 9news.com.au.

The news comes just days after a newlywed was struck and killed by lightning while hiking on her honeymoon in Colorado.

According to CBS News, Kathleen Bartlett, 31, from Denver, was hit while hiking Mount Yale near Buena Vista at an elevation of approximately 12,500 feet
