A man was rescued from the water after going overboard during a Red Funnel ferry crossing from the Isle of Wight to Southampton on Friday.

The incident happened as the ferry was arriving at Southampton.

Passengers said they witnessed the man "jump" into the water and alerted the crew.

The man overboard procedure was launched and a rescue boat recovered the man from the water, BT.com reports.

According to Metro, the man was looked at by paramedics before he was taken to hospital.

A Red Funnel spokesman told Isle of Wight County Press Online: "The crew were alerted by passengers and immediately executed their man overboard procedure. Red Funnel vessel Red Jet 4 and the Hythe Ferry were also in the vicinity and assisted in the rescue.

"The Red Eagle's rescue boat was launched and recovered the person from the water, prior to them being passed to the Southampton Harbour Master's Launch."

In 2013, a major search was launched after it was believed a woman had fallen overboard from the Stornoway ferry in Scotland.

The maritime emergency services launched a large-scale search for the woman, thought to be in her mid-50s, when all the passengers disembarked the crossing from Lewis to Ullapool but her bike was left behind.

Police were called to Ullapool pier before 7pm after it emerged there was no sign of the woman, and no explanation for why her bike had been left on board.

Lifeboats headed at full speed to the scene and Stornoway Coastguard rescue helicopter focused a search near where she was last seen on board the Caledonian MacBrayne-operated MV Isle of Lewis ferry.

But the rescue mission was called off when the woman was found by police in Inverness, where she had booked herself into a youth hostel.
