A holiday of a lifetime: Icelandair's exclusive lighthouse hotel

Updated

If you're looking for something completely different for your next holiday, check out this magnificent pop-up private lighthouse hotel in Iceland.

Icelandair has just announced the launch of this gem as part of its 'Incredible Stopover' offering, which allows passengers flying to the USA to stay for up to seven days in Iceland at no extra airfare.

Beautiful, majestic and remote, Dyrhólaey lighthouse, which sits on the awe-inspiring central south coast of Iceland, has been transformed for the first time into a beautiful exclusive boutique hotel. It's open to guests for a limited time only: during September and October, Icelandair passengers can book it for one or two nights and combine it with a stay in new luxury suites at Icelandair's Hotel Reykjavik Marina, as well as enjoy a range of amazing activities as part of a brilliant package.

Dyrhólaey lighthouse is more than a century old and the country's only active lighthouse for visitors to sleep in - so it's surely the most exclusive accommodation in the whole of Iceland. Perched on the cliffs at the southern most point of the country, in the surrounding area of Vík í Mýrdal, it offers the most glorious views in all directions (believe us, we've been and seen it!). You can spend hours simply gazing over the endless Icelandic coastline, the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the Dyrhólaey ('door hole'), a huge arch of lava which reaches out to the sea. Watch the sky and the scenery change by the second (this is a perfect spot to watch the Northern Lights), hike the cliffs, stroll the otherworldly black beaches and enjoy the wildlife - if you're lucky you might even spot the elusive arctic fox.

A top Icelandic interior designer was responsible for transforming the castle-shaped lighthouse into a luxury boutique hotel. Themed with tones and hues from the surrounding area and finished with understated simplistic touches such as locally made Icelandic wool blankets and traditional furnishings, ultimate comfort and luxury are key in this spectacular location.

Icelandair's routes now connect 25 European destinations to 14 North American cities.

Holidaymakers taking this stopover option will also be given the choice of adding a selection of activities to make their trip complete, including a helicopter tour of Iceland, discovering the beautiful black beaches on horseback, hiking up Sólheimajökull glacier and exploring the picturesque area surrounding the lighthouse and southern Iceland.

Personal service throughout the experience, including a greeting on arrival, breakfast and the opportunity to have a private dinner cooked by an Icelandic chef.

The once-in-a-lifetime trip to the lighthouse and incredible activities will be available for Icelandair transatlantic passengers to enjoy from 1st September to 1st November 2015 and can be booked at Icelandair.com/Stopover.

Prices start from €3,200 ( £2,230) per person, for two nights accommodation, including one night's stay at the lighthouse and a selection of incredible activities, for a group of four people.
