Man accidentally runs over wife

Police crime scene

An elderly man accidentally ran over and killed his wife after being startled when she slammed the car's boot shut, an inquest has heard.
William Robinson, 77, and his wife Jennifer, 81, had been preparing for a trip to the seaside when the fatal collision occurred on October 5 last year.

Coroners in Lincolnshire heard that Mrs Robinson slammed the rear hatch on the couple's Volkswagen Golf so hard that it made Mr Robinson jump, causing him to move his foot from the brake pedal.

The car then rolled backwards down the driveway, striking Mrs Robinson and pinning her underneath it.

She was taken to hospital where she later died of severe crush injuries.

This week a coroner ruled that Mrs Robinson's death had been an accident.

Giving evidence at the inquest, Mr Robinson said: "We decided to drive from Caistor to Cleethorpes and walk around the boating lake," the Telegraph reports.

"Prior to that she said we could go to Morrisons on the way back.

She lifted the boot up to put some carrier bags in. My foot was on the accelerator and I went backwards and I heard a bang. She was laid under the car."

"The paramedic said that her heart is getting weaker and then the man in charge said 'there's nothing more we can do for her'.

"I have handed my licence in and I have got rid of my car."

A neighbour of the Robinsons, who did not want to be named, told the Telegraph: "They were inseparable and such a lovely couple. This will haunt him for the rest of his life."
