New Alfa Romeo Giulia revealed

Alfa Romeo Giulia

It's been four years since Alfa Romeo's last saloon offering, the 159, quietly shuffled out of showrooms. Now it has been replaced by this, the Giulia, which Alfa hopes will tempt executives out of their BMWs and Jaguars.
And it seems the Italian brand is going straight for the jugular, unveiling the range-topping Quadrifoglio version first. Powered by a Ferrari-derived 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine, it develops 503bhp and will hit 0-62mph in a supercar-rivaling 3.9 seconds – more than enough to challenge performance rivals such as the BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 AMG.

Details of the rest of the engine range, including a new turbocharged four-cylinder petrol motor, will be announced at the Giulia's public debut at September's Frankfurt motor show.

The new model's front-end styling is dominated by a central grille and swept-back LED headlamps. The gaping air intakes and jutting lip spoiler built into the front bumper mark the car out as the hot Quadrifoglio version.

A coupe-like roof line that flows into a stubby boot – complete with a large lip spoiler – further add to the purposeful aesthetic. Finishing the package is a set of quad exhaust pipes and Alfa's 'teledial' alloy wheels.

The Giulia is just one of a slew of new models expected from Alfa in the coming years, all of which have been designed with driver engagement in mind. As such, the new saloon features a 50/50 weight distribution, race-car-style double-wishbone suspension and extensive use of lightweight materials including carbon fibre.

The new Alfa Romeo Giulia is due to reach showrooms in 2016, where it will eventually be joined by an estate version. Check it out in this first teaser video, below.
