British tourist drowns at Malta's Blue Lagoon
A British man has drowned at Malta's famous Blue Lagoon.
The 59-year-old got into trouble at the picturesque tourist hotspot in Comino at around 2.30pm on Sunday.
He was taken by helicopter to the nearby Gozo general hospital, where he later died.
According to the Guardian, Etienne Micalles, secretary general of the emergency response rescue corps, said: "The man was outside of the Blue Lagoon when bystanders reported to the lifeguard station that there was a person in the water who appeared to be immobile."
The Red Cross chief lifeguard, Robert Brincau, said double red flags were hoisted by lifeguards at the time, indicating that rough seas were creating dangerous swimming conditions.
He said that bathers were also verbally warned about the dangers of swimming on Sunday.
But, according to the Mirror, he added: "Unfortunately, not everyone heeded the warnings endangering their lives and the lives of lifeguards who are then called upon to rescue the swimmers."
The news comes just a month after two other British tourists drowned at the same spot.
Dentists Kamran Shabir and Lyace Ali were killed while swimming at the Blue Lagoon in May.
Back in 2012, a British student also drowned in Malta while attempting to swim through an underwater tunnel.
