We've all seen people who've had to be removed by force after failing to get through to the next round on X Factor - and it never persuades the judges to change their minds.

All the same, it's a tactic that one woman adopted yesterday morning in Manchester, when she was told her job application had been unsuccessful.

The unnamed city centre employer reportedly turned her down on the spot because she'd forgotten to bring her passport, as she'd been asked. But instead of taking the rejection on the chin, the woman lost her temper and refused to leave.

She stayed put in the office for an hour and a half, shouting: "Go on! Call the police!" - and staff duly did.

"Odd job 11am," tweeted Greater Manchester Police City Centre following the incident. "Woman who attended job interview staged 90 minute 'sit-in' after being told she wasn't being considered. Left upon our arrival."

It's not usual, to say the least, for the police to get involved in the job application process - but it's not the first time that it's happened.

Last year, they were called in to an employment office in Stockholm, after 61,000 people showed up for a recruitment meeting, cramming the building and spilling out into the road. It was hardly their fault: through a glitch with the computer, every unemployed person in the city had been invited.

Last autumn, the cops were also needed to deal with an incident in San Diego in which a prospective employer suggested that he could smell alcohol on a job seeker's breath - and the applicant stabbed him in the arm. Luckily for the police, he'd already given his name and address.

And in Brooklyn in 2011, a job applicant was spotted stealing a hard drive while he was completing a job application form at a shop. He was called back for an interview - and arrested as soon as he arrived.

In the case of the Manchester woman, some Twitter users think she's had a raw deal. "That's commitment and dedication, I'd hire her!," comments one, with another adding, "Well, at least she was keen!"
