Fancy dipping your toe in turquoise waters while lying on a pure, white sandy beach this summer? Don't be fooled into thinking you have to travel to the other side of the world to be within chance of doing this, because there are hundreds of places not that far from home which will grant you the same experience, without the hefty price tag.

Europe is home to plenty of spectacular beaches - the only problem is, how do you find the best of the bunch?

Lonely Planet has compiled a list of the best beaches in Europe for 2015 and the results are pretty spectacular. Take Peniche in Portugal, for example (fantastic for surfers - it hosts one of the European stops of the World Surfing League) or the UK's very own Bantham Beach in Northumberland - perfect for enjoying the rugged beauty of the British coastline.

Why not try something a little different this year and experience one of Iceland's iconic black basalt beaches. Vík in the south of the country boasts not just a stunning coastline but a range of fascinating wildlife too.

So, if you're keen to learn more about the best European beaches to set up your deck chair on this summer then take a look at our slideshow below to see which other coastal spots have made it onto the Lonely Planet's list for this year.
