A British backpacker who was jailed in Malaysia after posing nude for a picture on a sacred mountain has returned to the UK.

Eleanor Hawkins, 23, from Derbyshire was part of a group of 10 tourists who stripped on Mount Kinabalu on 30 May.

Four people in the group were jailed for three days or "committing an obscene act in public".

In a statement she read on arrival at Heathrow Airport, Ms Hawkins said: "I just want to say how relieved and happy I am to finally be home. I know my behaviour was foolish and I know how much offence we all caused to the local people of Sabah. For that I am truly sorry."

According to The Guardian, the aeronautical engineering graduate was fined £859.

On 5 June, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the mountain killing 18 people.

The BBC reports that a Dutch national and two Canadian siblings were jailed alongside Ms Hawkins.

Several other backpackers who posed for the photo remain wanted by police.

In January, a British backpacker was banned from Cambodia following a naked motorbike ride.

Crawford Brown, 23, from Oban, Scotland, was jailed for two nights with his fellow pranksters, Catarina Aarnio, 22, and Giancarlo Allocca, 30, before being deported to Thailand.

The graduates were arrested after riding past a police station with no clothes on.

A video captured the moment, showing Catarina, from Finland, sat on the back of Giancarlo's bike.
