Church camping (champing): Britain's new craze - and it's more fun than glamping
A new holiday craze has hit Britain. Forget glamping - it's all about champing (camping in churches) these days. According to fans, it's the ultimate way to experience rural Britain.
There's no doubt that champing provides a wonderfully unique escape for lovers of camping, as well as those who like to get up close and personal with centuries-old buildings, surrounded by the beautiful English countryside.
The Churches Conservation Trust currently offers three churches for short breaks in the UK. Champers can enjoy the Georgian interior of the Church of St Cyriac and St Julitta at Swaffham Prior in Cambridgeshire, revel in the Medieval simplicity of All Saints' Church in Aldwincle, Northamptonshire, or bed down in a box pew beneath the 17th century wall paintings of the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Fordwich, Kent.
Leisurely walks, canoeing adventures, storytelling and yoga can be arranged by the Trust for you to take full advantage of your surroundings, and when night falls you can get cosy in the candlelit church before a peaceful night's sleep.
Peter Aiers, Director of The Churches Conservation Trust in the South East, said: "As a veteran 'champer', I can recommend it without reservation. There's something so special about the silence and tranquillity of a rural church, and enjoying this over two days is a great way to commune with centuries of history, whilst escaping the push-button trappings of modern life."
Two-day champing adventures cost £60 per person for a one-night stay including breakfast. Book before 14 June 2015 and you can take advantage of an early bird offer of £45 per person per night.
