The moment a lion prepared to attack a tourist on safari was caught on camera by a fellow holidaymaker.

Katherine Chappell, 29, a film editor on the hit show Game of Thrones, died after being attacked by the animal while on safari at the Lion Park in Johannesburg, South Africa.

A tourist in the car behind, Ben Govender, 38, grabbed his camera to catch what he thought was just going to be a memorable photograph of the lion peeking through the window of the car in front.

But he unwittingly caught the moment just seconds before Katherine, who had wound her window down for a close encounter, was fatally attacked.

The lion lunged forward and reportedly bit Katherine on the shoulder before pushing further into the car and fatally mauling her.

Speaking to the Mirror, Mr Govender said: "It was terrifying. After the first bite, the lioness retreated from the car with blood dripping from her mouth and paw.

"We all thought she was done and didn't like what she'd just bitten. But like someone in a temper that wasn't satisfied in a fight, she leaped back into the car and mauled the passenger.

"The rangers came running in and the two lions ran off. And it was too late to do anything to save her."

According to the Daily Telegraph, he added: "At first it just looked like an amazing shot of a lion stood up at the window. The lion can only have had its head in that window for around 15 seconds.

"At that moment the tourist was face to face with one of the most ferocious, incredible and magnificent animals. But then the lioness lunged and we saw the driver diving into the passenger seat and punching at the lioness."

Katherine was from New York and worked as a video editor for a Canadian company on movies and shows including Game of Thrones.

Back in March, an Australian tourist was lucky to survive after being attacked by a lion while on safari at the same park.

Brendan Smith, from Perth, was mauled by the animal just 36 hours after arriving in the popular safari destination on holiday.
