Two men are thought to have been eaten by huge saltwater crocodiles in separate attacks in Queensland, Australia.

The latest incident saw a 33-year-old Aboriginal man disappear after he went spear fishing at the Cape York Peninsula at the far northern end of Queensland.

Cairns water police launched a land, sea and air search on Thursday after the man went fishing at 11am but had not returned by 3.50pm.

His empty dinghy was discovered on rocks near where he'd been fishing.

The news comes two weeks after another local man, Stanley Charlie, 65, disappeared after going swimming in a crodocile-infested river at night.

Sky News reports that he was reported missing on 20 May after swimming in the Endeavour River in Cooktown on the peninsula, which is a remote area also home to deadly bull and tiger sharks.

According to the Express, back in 2011 a barge skipper called David Fordson, 49, was killed by a huge crocodile while snorkelling at Bushy Island off the peninsula.

And in 2008, Scotsman Arthur Booker, 63, from Brisbane, was on holiday in the area with his wife, and went missing after going to the riverside to check crab pots.

His remains were found weeks later in a 4.3-metre crocodile.

Also, in March this year, a dog was killed and eaten by a crocodile near a boat ramp on a riverbank in Queensland.

The incident occurred in the village of Marton, north of Cooktown, about 150 metres from a boat ramp on the Endeavour River.
