Man dies after crashing into drainage ditch

A motorist has died after his car was found in a drainage ditch following a crash in a village in Somerset.

The man's body was discovered inside the car in Mark, near Bridgewater.

A 27-year-old man was arrested following the crash.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman told Western Morning News: "The body of a man was found inside the vehicle.

"We're carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances of this collision. A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in custody for questioning."

According to the Daily Mail, a blue Citroen was involved in the collision before it overturned in a rhyne, a type of drainage ditch used to turn marshy lowland wetlands into farmland.

A police diver examined the scene.

In 2014, a double decker bus carrying 16 passengers toppled over into a ditch in Somerset, injuring two.

The number 21 Taunton service crashed on the Coast Road in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset.

The bus company, First Somerset, said the drainage ditch collapsed under the weight of the bus, but thankfully nobody was seriously injured.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said two people suffered minor injuries, telling the Western Morning News: "One was taken to Weston General Hospital, the other was taken to Burnham-on-Sea's minor injury unit. The road was closed and the bus has now been recovered by the bus company."
