An Australian man who repeatedly raped a Dutch tourist over six weeks in Melbourne has been jailed for 17 years.

Alfio Anthony Granata pleaded guilty to multiple rapes, threats to kill and intentionally causing serious injury to the 21-year-old backpacker.

He imprisoned the woman in a hotel room in 2012 after they had sex and took drugs with his partner.

According to the BBC, the woman was only freed when she tried to kill herself, forcing Granata to call emergency services.

In the Victorian county court on Monday, Judge Frank Gucciardo said his behaviour was vile and repulsive.

"The victim was in constant pain," he said. "She was degraded and humiliated."

Granata and his partner Jennifer Peaston met the backpacker at a party and invited her to their hotel room.

9news.com.au reports that the victim was raped with household items, whipped with a mobile phone charger and told she would be killed.

She was also forced to perform oral sex on Granata and was strangled, cut and stabbed.

Police said Granata shot extensive video footage of the attack and it took officers six months to sift through it all.
