Want maximum sunshine at minimum cost? Then Alicante is your best bet, says a new survey looking at the best cheap holidays for sun-loving brits.

Hotels.com compared the hours of May sunshine per day with the average cost of a night's hotel room in the "pay per ray" survey.

Alicante in Spain finished top of the table, with an average hotel price per day of £64 being divided by the area's 10.4 hours of sun to give a sunshine price index figure of just £6.15. WORDS: PA.

Second was Lisbon in Portugal, with a figure of £7.09, and third was Warsaw in Poland (£7.20).These were followed by Vilnius in Lithuania (£7.92) and Madrid (£8.23).

Due to a comparative lack of sun and high hotel prices, London languished in 19th place in the 20-destination table, with a hotel price of £127 and 5.8 hours of sunshine giving the UK capital a score of £21.89.

The most expensive destination was Geneva with a sunshine price index of £23.00.

Carolina Annand of Hotels.com said: "We know how important weather is when choosing a holiday destination, and this new Index will allow travellers seeking sun the opportunity to choose the right location to get the most rays this summer.

"From these results it's clear Alicante, Lisbon and Warsaw are the cities to consider if you're looking to get more tan for under a tenner."
