A Canadian family says their home has been destroyed by guests who rented it out from accommodation website Airbnb.

Star King, an artist, and her husband Mark rented her house out in northwest Calgary to four adults who'd come to town for a wedding.

The couple went to stay at Mark's parents in another part of the city for the weekend while they rented out the house.

However, they were later contacted by neighbours telling them a party bus had dropped around 100 people to their home.

Police were called after a fight broke out on the lawn, and it took an hour for the Kings to kick out a group of around 20 uninvited guests following the three-day event.

After everyone had left, they were faced with a trail of destruction throughout the house.

Condoms were left clogging up toilets, couch cushions were ripped and scattered everywhere, cigarettes butts and ash covered surfaces along with mayonnaise and barbecue sauce, and piles of rubbish and broken glass littered the house.

Accoridng to Mashable, Mark said: "We were almost knocked over by the fumes, the smell. I mean this is our home, this is our sanctuary, we've got a five-year-old and a one-year-old and the sense of violation, the lie that was told, and the trust that I had in somebody and this happens, it was just beyond my imagination ... When we came in, one of the police said this isn't a party, this was a drug-induced orgy."

Star added: "They threw paint all over my works that I was going to sell for probably a couple thousand. Just totally disrespectful behaviour."

According to a statement from Airbnb, the guests have been banned from using the site again, and the damages will be covered.

Airbnb spokesman Jakob Kerr told CBC News: "We have zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour and our team is working quickly to make this right.

"We have banned this guest from Airbnb, and our Trust and Safety team will offer its full assistance to law enforcement in any investigation of this incident.

"We have been in very close contact with these hosts and we are working quickly to reimburse them under our $1 Million Host Guarantee, which covers a host's property in the rare event of damages.

"Over 35 million guests have stayed on Airbnb, and property damage is extremely rare."

The King family added they had no problems when they'd rented their house out two weeks before through Airbnb, and had used the service satisfactorily themselves.

The NY Daily Newsreports that the damages were thought to be worth around $50,000 (approx £30,000). The paper adds that police have contacted the renter and that the Crown is exploring possible charges of mischief to property against them.
