Eight-foot wide house costs £750,000

Despite measuring just 1.52 metres wide, this North London house is up for sale for a whopping three quarters of a million pounds.

Located in smart Barnsbury, it consists of just 542 square feet of space, but manages to cram in two bedrooms, a kitchen, a reception room and a study - which is just four feet eleven inches wide.

There's a 31-foot patio garden at the back of the pretty Georgian property, which is sandwiched between two larger houses.

"Set on a sought-after tree-lined residential street, this stylish two bedroom period house offers beautifully bright living space throughout with characterful touches and a pretty rear garden," says agent Foxtons.

The Ripplevale Grove house has a kitchen, shower room and second lavatory on the lower ground floor, with a bedroom on the ground floor. The master bedroom is two flights of stairs from the nearest loo, but is the largest room in the house, at just eight feet eight inches wide.

The reason for the high price tag, of course, is the house's enviable location - within the desirable N1 postcode, and close to St Pancras International and Kings Cross stations, as well as the shops, bars and restaurants of Upper Street.

But the house is far from the narrowest in the UK - or even in London. Last May, for example, we reported on a house in south-west London's Denmark Hill that's only eight and a quarter feet wide - but that was still on the market for £450,000.

And just a couple of months ago, a seven-foot-wide house in Hackney, East London, hit the market at £375,000 - although even desperate London buyers ended up balking at this price.

But the British record, we believe, is the house known as the Wedge on the Isle of Cumbrae in Scotland, which went up for sale two months ago for a bargain £85,000. Although it widens out at the back, as its name implies, from the front it's not even wide enough for a standard front door.
