Camilla's homemade honey - a snip at £20

The Duchess of Cornwall has launched her own brand of homemade honey. It has been produced by bees in her Wiltshire garden, and she is putting all 250 jars of it up for sale in Fortnum & Mason at £20 each. All the proceeds will go to the Medical Detection Dogs Charity - of which she is patron.

It's fair to say that the price owes much to the exclusivity of buying one of a limited number of Camilla's jars of honey, and a great deal to the fact she is trying to raise as much money as possible for the charity. However, £20 is not the priciest honey you'll find in the UK.

Most expensive honey

Selfridges sells Starflower Honey for £19.99 - made in Hampshire. It also sells Vasilissa Greek Honey with Edible Gold Leaf - which will set you back almost double the cost of Camilla's honey - at £39.99. The honey is said to be particularly fine - although the gold makes up some of the cost.

Harrods sells a honey that's even pricier, the Tahi Honey, at £34.95. This is New Zealand Manuka Honey - which tends to be one of the most expensive types in the world. If you prefer something home-grown, then you can buy Manuka honey made in the UK: the Tregothan estate in Cornwall does a version for £29.95.

However, if you really want to blow a fortune on honey, you need to track down Sidr honey from the valley of Hydramaut in Yemen - made by bees that only feed on the Sidr tree. It tends to be used by people who have faith in its medicinal properties, and the best grade can easy cost more than £10 per teaspoon.

If all of this strikes you as a bit rich, then you can still buy your own jar of royal honey at a far more modest price. Prince Charles has his own - under the Duchy Originals brand - made by bees on the Balmoral estate, and selling for just £4.99.

But what do you think? Would you spend £20 on a jar of honey? Let us know in the comments.
