First impressions
Provencal heaven with more than a dash of Riviera glam thrown in. The Royal Mougins Hotel is nestled in the midst of a hill-top forest, yet is only 15 minutes away from the beautiful, but admittedly rather crowded, beaches of Cannes. The hotel is a 19th century stone-built bastide typical of the area. But the inside is contemporary, clean and modern - perfect if that's what you're looking for, but don't expect French country charm.

What's to love?
Seriously breathtaking views across the private lake-dotted golf course with its olive and cyprus trees. Eating breakfast overlooking that scene every morning was a definite highlight. The friendly, laidback service - it's an upmarket hotel but you don't have to tread on eggshells. Enjoying drinks around a pool that really is actually heated (SO disappointing when you can barely put a toe in). And the location is pretty perfect - the quaint cobbled streets, art galleries and buzzing cafes of Mougins are right on your doorstep (well, a three-minute cab ride away for those who are in 'holiday mode' - and heels). It's a painter's paradise, with Picasso choosing to spend the last 15 years of his life here.

Where to eat
The indoor/outdoor restaurant and terrace, called La Terrasse Du 18, headed up by chef Philippe Artaud, is the place to be. The aforementioned views are worth the experience alone, but, thankfully, the gourmet Mediterranean seasonal menu offers up some real tasty treats. Dinner here, however, leaves your wallet a little light, so the terrace is also a great spot for watching the sunset - cocktail in hand - before heading into Mougins for a great-value cafe option. There are, of course, high-end restaurants in the village too, but there are also some top purse-friendly picks.

Best rooms
The hotel has 29 suites, starting at Superior level, through to Deluxe, and then Premium. Each suite has a private terrace, most with views over the golf course, a living room with a sofa bed, a kitchenette, and comfy queen-size beds with sleek ensuites. Dark woods and neutral colours dominate the look.

If you do one thing here, make sure it's...
The obvious suggestion here would be 'play golf'. But you really don't have to be a golf player to enjoy a stay at the Royal Mougins. However, if the opportunity arises to take a whiz around the golf course, then definitely snap it up - it's a stunning sight worth seeing even if you're not playing. With the likes of Michael Douglas having played a round or two on the 18-hole course, we're sure golfers won't be disappointed, either.

This place is perfect if you're...
Looking for the ideal mix between the quiet beauty of Provence and the glamour of the French Riviera. And, of course, if you love to go swimming and enjoy a massage while hubby plays golf.
