A couple from Ohio have been found dead in their cruise ship cabin in an apparent murder-suicide.

They were on a Caribbean cruise, which left from Tampa, Florida, on Sunday, and their bodies were found in their "blood-soaked" cabin at 11.30am on Thursday when the ship docked in Puerto Rico.

Crew members on Holland America Line's MS Ryndam found the couple after going to check on them when they hadn't been seen for a while.

It is not immediately known exactly how or when they died.

According to the Mirror, a spokesman for HAL told the Marine Link website: "The cabin was immediately secured, and the authorities were notified, including the FBI. We are cooperating fully with the investigation, and the authorities will make the official determination on what occurred."

The NY Daily News reports that Holland America spokesman Erik Elvejord said: "We are terribly saddened by this tragic event."

The ship is on a two-week cruise of the southern Caribbean.
