Two beachgoers enjoying a paddle in the sea at the Destin Resort in Florida were blissfully unaware there was a huge shark just metres away from them.

Scott McCain and his friends were in a penthouse room in Silver Beach Towers when they saw the shark right near the couple, according to the Mirror.

They shouted to the pair to get out of the water, but they seemingly ignored them at first.

Then, it appears, the couple suddenly realise the boys are shouting "Shark!" and make a run for the shoreline.

The shark can be seen getting nearer and the boys laughingly say: "Yeah, now run."

Speaking to 11alive.com, one of the boys in the apartment, Patrick Trainor, said: "Once they're in a feeding frenzy or something, if it got close enough to those people, he was just going to bite what was near, and that's when the yelling started.

"We were screaming down and they disregarded it, looked like, he threw his hands up like 'yea right.' But when he finally figured out the shark was there it looked like he walked on water."

Hammerheads can grow up to six metres (19.7ft) long, and are found worldwide in warmer waters along coastlines and continental shelves.

They are known to eat a large range of prey including fish, squid, octopus, crustaceans, and other sharks. Stingrays are a particular favourite.

These sharks are often found swimming along the bottom of the ocean, stalking their prey. Their unique head is used as a weapon when hunting down prey. The hammerhead shark uses its head to pin down stingrays and eats the ray when the ray is weak and in shock.

The great hammerhead, tending to be larger and more aggressive than most hammerheads, occasionally engage in cannibalism, as they are known to eat other hammerhead sharks, including their own young.

Of the 11 known species of hammerhead, only three of them are known to be particularly dangerous to humans: the scalloped, great, and smooth hammerheads. As of 2013 there have been 33 attacks, but no fatalities.
