A group of thrillseekers got more adventure than they bargained for when they were forced to climb down from a rollercoaster after it got stuck in its tracks.

Workers had to assist riders on New York's Luna Park Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster after it got stuck on its inaugural run of the Summer 2015 season on Sunday 29 March.

The ride stopped just short of the initial drop as a safety feature kicked in as the conveyor belt used to propel the coaster slipped off of its track.

The first riders had to be escorted down the landmark rollercoaster after being stuck for about five minutes. Video of the scene was posted on Instagram:

The park's operations team reportedly helped each passenger down "one by one," and the ride was closed for the rest of the day for repairs.

According to the Mirror, one rider, Diana Elsener, said: "Coming down was extremely terrifying.

"I was so excited as we were hitting the peak of that first drop. Then, we suddenly jerked to a stop. It was just so cold up there."

"Nobody was injured and those on the ride were safely evacuated and will be able to come ride again for free when it is open again."
