Alpina celebrates 50th anniversary with powerful new models

Alpina Edition 50

Alpina has a long history of taking impressive standard BMW models and boosting power, handling and equipment to make eye-catching low-volume sports cars for discerning individuals. To celebrate the company's 50-year history it is has now created its most powerful machines to date.
That latest models to receive the Alpina treatment are the current 5 Series saloon and estate and 6 Series coupe, which are the fastest and most hardcore models ever created by the tuning company.

Boasting a muscular twin-turbocharged V8 engine these new Alpinas are based on the tuner's already pretty potent B5 Bi-Turbo and B6 Bi-Turbo models, but gain heavily revised motors, which pack an even bigger punch – with no less than 592bhp on tap – along with handcrafted bodies and interior trim.

All this extra muscle helps these autobahn stormers to slam past the 62mph mark in a blistering 4.2 seconds and keep going all the way to the far side of 200mph. Despite their insatiable appetite for speed, these Alpinas are still capable of 29.7mpg claimed economy along with emissions low enough to warrant car tax of £285 per year.

Just 50 of the B5 saloons will be made – though buyers can swap the saloon body for an estate if desired – along with 50 B6 coupes. Changes over the standard BMW models include an extra 59bhp, along with substantially lighter alloy wheels and exhaust system, to boost acceleration and roadholding.

Talking about these anniversary models, Alpina GB brand manager Matthew Stripling said: "It combines very high levels of long-term comfort with superb performance that is available from low engine speeds, making it effortlessly fast.

"Add the deep bass soundtrack and the feeling of bespoke luxury, and you have a highly engaging car that offers a unique set of attributes for the discerning enthusiast."

BMW fans are bound to love these rapid new Alpinas. The only thing we're really not sure about is the bright green leather trim centres on the seats. Have a look for yourself in the gallery below.
