New Jaguar XF unveiled in daring stunt

Jaguar XF

Jaguar has unveiled its all-new XF executive saloon, in a daring high-wire stunt over the River Thames.
The new model, which is set to make its official public debut at next week's New York motor show, is the Solihull brand's latest offensive against the domination of the German Big Three in the executive saloon market. It is due to reach showrooms this autumn.

This second generation XF is built around Jaguar's new aluminium chassis, which also underpins the smaller XE saloon, and will be available with the same range of 'Ingenium' engines, including 2.0- and 3.0-litre turbodiesels and a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol motor.

The car's new lightweight architecture means the XF weighs some 190kg less than the outgoing model, which will not only benefit fuel economy and CO2 emissions (which are as low as 104g/km), but also pay dividends to the model's road-holding.

Keen to set the new XF as the driver's car in the executive saloon segment, the model benefits from race-car style double-wishbone front suspension and a near 50:50 weight distribution. Jaguar claims the car's structure is 30 per cent stiffer than before, which will further benefit handling.

The XF's interior takes elements from the larger XJ saloon, including its steering wheel, central gear selector and wraparound trim, though it exhibits a more restrained design overall, with the eye catching vents and dashboard of the flagship limousine replaced with more conventional layout.

Amongst the toys hidden within the expensive looking cabin is Jaguar's new 'InControl Touch Pro' multimedia system, which uses quad-core processing for lightning responses to inputs – something that proved a bugbear in the ageing system currently used.

To showcase the new XF's light weight and agility, the brand sent it over the River Thames in what is a world-first high-wire crossing in a vehicle. You can check out the stunt in the video below.
