Teenager dies after being struck by a police car in Birmingham

A teenager has died after being struck by a policecar.

Harry Kirkham, 16, from Kingstanding, Birmingham, was hit by the patrol vehicle as he crossed Sutton New Road after leaving a church with friends just after 9pm on Wednesday. Words: PA.

West Midlands Police said the officer driving the Peugeot was not thought to be answering an emergency call at the time of the collision in Birmingham.

The emergency response officer, who is based in Sutton Coldfield, provided first aid at the scene while awaiting the arrival of paramedics.

He is said to be "traumatised" by the ordeal, but is assisting the investigation and has been questioned by members of his force's professional standards department, the force added.

West MidlandsPolice Chief Inspector Neil Hobson said in a statement on their Facebook page: "No parent should have to lose a child, particularly in such tragic circumstances. This evening our thoughts are with Harry's family following their tragic loss.

"As Harry was hit by apolice car, West Midlands Policehas informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission, who continue to be updated."

Witnesses have been spoken to and CCTV cameras which may have captured the moment Harry was struck by the Peugeot have been identified. The footage is being reviewed by investigators.

Anyone who was in the area at the relevant time and has not yet spoken to the police is urged to call investigating officers on 101.
